Status of Singles
A Single
Isnt taken seriously.
Is Expected to do all the sacrifices as much for others.
Is taken for granted.
Is a target of everyone's suspicion.
A Single in City
They Pity you
For having to cook yourself
For having to do all chores yourself
For living alone with no Wife.
A Single in Train
You are expected to adjust every bit of space
You should be ready to take the Upper or side berth because of others families
You can be pitied for having train food and not home food
You can be looked down with suspicion
A Single in Society / Family
You are taken for Granted
You are thought to be Not Responisble
You arent meant to get Gifts (or are always the last to get)
You should be there working/ caring for others.
The World belongs not to the singles. One needs to be a "family" person with a Wife/ Husband and Children.
A Married person is a "Responsible one".
A Married person with Children is a more "Responsible one".
They are People with "Responsibility on their shoulders".
They bear the torch of the future.
At social ceremonies, they are the ones who are first to be invited of all, treated well and provided gifts. While singles have to make do with a smile, many a times of pretension.
Indeed the plight of singles can be gauged by just watching all the socio- religious ceremonies which hardly leave any space for them. In certain cultures, if you die single you are supposed to be married to a tree before burial/ cremation or have to be laid in a certain position in the grave!
In certain others, single men and women after marriageable age can be a butt of jokes-from social to sexual and beyond. They could be looked upon as burden and if employed, then as an alternative source of money (what will you do with all this money dear!).
Its after all a heterosexual married people's world. The basic unit of our society is a heterosexual family that keeps flowering and fruiting (Phoolo- Phalo). A Man must marry and marry a woman only and bear children for a respectable existance, thus keep going the existance of the heterosexual society itself.
The ideological roots are made strong through institutions of Everyday Rituals, Religion, Education , Media and Language such that Singles are kept at bay, forced to end their 'irresponsible" freedom and keep the light of a certain ideological structure going.

Living Alone
Living Alone is empowering
Its Freedom at Best
And the whole World is yours
But......
The only worse thing is
You have to cook
You have to eat
And thats really boring.
